Anatomy of a Westclox Wind-up Alarm Clock
I recently took apart my Westclox alarm clock to clean it and to see how it worked. Here’s a video of all the parts of the inside. It stopped during the video, so you also get to see how the spring tightens when you wind it up. I’ve had this clock for more than five years, and always wondered how to peer inside, until my father told me to turn the knobs in the opposite direction, to take them off. This video is of the results. These kinds of clocks always fascinated me. The main mechanism drives the second hand with five gears, and a balance wheel (“fly wheel”), while the minute and hour hands are driven by white plastic gears in between the clock face and the gear box. You can also see the actuator that adjusts the clock’s speed. The fly wheel appears to be balanced on two screws. There’s two knobs to adjust the time and alarm time. The other two turnkeys are to wind up the main spring and the alarm’s spring.
